PROMISES, which was made by Justine Shapiro, Carlos Bolado, and myself, follows my journey back to Israel and the Palestinian territories. In the film I visit Palestinian refugee camps, Israeli settlements, and the more familiar neighborhoods of Jerusalem where I meets seven Palestinian and Israeli kids. These kids live about 20 minutes apart, yet they exist in completely separate worlds; the physical, historical and emotional obstacles between them run deep. PROMISES explores the nature of these boundaries and tells the story of a few children who dared to cross the lines to meet their neighbors. Rather than focusing on political events, We tried in making the film to offer a refreshing, human, even humorous portrait of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
PROMISES won multiple awards including two Emmys and an Academy nomination for best documentary. The film was selected for numerous festivals around the world, screened in movie theaters in North and South America, Europe, and Asia, and was broadcast on TV to an international audience of approximately 35 million viewers.
